The search for perfection and imperfection. That’s exactly what inspires me. I love to capture models in a natural way while telling a story through fashion.

I’m Liselotte, a fashion and portrait photographer from the Netherlands. When I was only fourteen years old, I already knew that I wanted to be a fashion photographer. While reading many different fashion magazines, I was fascinated with the series of photographs in them. That’s what made me buy my first camera and I spend all my free time learning how it worked.

At age seventeen my dream came true: I got accepted at the Art Academy in Rotterdam. I learned so much: not only in school, but also besides that. I did many portfolio shoots to practice and to meet new, talented people. Photographing people really is my passion, especially the fashion and portrait genre.

Which shoots I love the most? Definitely the ones on a location with beautiful daylight. However, shooting in my own studio with my own equipment also makes me really happy. I always find it very important that the photographer is the one who controls the situation, not only when everything goes well, but especially when an unexpected situation arrives.

That’s one of the things people like about me on set: the fact that I’m always relaxed. I’m always listening to what the client wants and I surround myself with the best team members to do my job as best as possible.

When I’m behind the camera I’m always searching for little surprises. These I can find in my fascination for perfection, unexpected moments and working with daylight. I’m inspired by the beauty of people, better said, what I define as beautiful in a person. That is what makes them unique.

My dream is to work for leading fashion magazines and brands who want to make campaigns in an editorial way. In other words, selling by telling a story.

Right now, I’m making another dream come true: I’m writing a book for the starting fashion photographer. In this book I will tell you all about the camera settings, studio set-ups, how to work with teams and the business side of photography. The book will be written and printed in Dutch, but I’ll translate it to English as well, so in that way it can also be read as an English e-book.

To pursue my love for photography, I chose to study photography at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam where I graduated in 2013 and the Accademia di Belli Arti di Brera in Milan. Besides my stay in Milan, I also expand my professional horizon on field trips for a couple of months to Los Angeles (click here to see all my posts about L.A.) and smaller trips to Paris and Rome for collaborations with model agencies and designers. Photography gives me the opportunity to tell my own stories on beautiful locations with the influence of fashion. I enjoy collaborating and completing ideas, but I also love the journey. Learning, meeting new people and getting creatively and technically better with each photo shoot. I’m always searching for little surprises when I’m behind the camera. I can find these in my fascination for perfection, unexpected moments and working with daylight. I’m also inspired by the beauty of people, and what I define as beautiful in a person is what makes them unique.

        How It All Started

It all started at the age of 15. I already knew that I was interested in fashion and portraits so I made many pictures with my sister and friends acting as my models. In that time I experimented a lot and one year later I decided to follow a course at an Art Academy to learn more about the creative process. At the age of 17 I was accepted at the Art Academy in Rotterdam. I was really inspired by how I could use conceptual art into fashion photography, in such a way that I also could use my own imagination. In fashion photography it’s important to collaborate with stylist, make-up artists and model agencies. So I did, and it is great to work with those talented people in this industry.

At the start of my third year, I decided to participate in an exchange program, so I studied for six month at the Art Academy in Milan, Italy. I could not resist to arrange a lot of photo shoots in my spare time. It was great to meet all these new international and creative people. During this period I learned a lot about myself and my photography.

During the graduation period I went to Paris and Milan to work on beautiful locations. For me it’s important to expand my workflow and I’m constantly searching for new sources of inspiration. Besides that, I set new goals for myself in order to expand my knowledge. My network is very important so I work with many different teams and model agencies all the time.
Right now, I’m doing editorial work, lookbooks, and testshoots with model agencies, but I still do a lot of personal work. Ideally, I’d like to focus on high-end fashion editorials and fashion clients all over the globe.
